Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are answers to the most common questions asked when preparing to take your puppy home:

Question 1: What is my puppy eating?

Your puppy is eating PawTree premium dog food (Real Chicken & Oatmeal or Real Turkey & Brown Rice). We love PawTree for its quality, variety, and health benefits. You can order at PawTree.com/mtview and use code INTRO4U for a discount. We suggest setting up EZship so you never run out.

Question 2: How many times per day should my puppy be fed?

8–12 weeks old: 3 meals per day (7am, noon, 6pm)

12+ weeks: 2 meals per day (morning & evening)

Start with ¼ cup per meal, soaked in water for 30 minutes to soften. Adjust based on stool quality—loose stools usually mean overfeeding.

Water: Available at all times (except overnight).

Question 3: When can I start training my puppy?

Start as soon as your puppy comes home. Feeding time is perfect for short lessons (sit, stay, come). We provide a training booklet and highly recommend the Baxter & Bella online training program for lifetime guidance.

Question 4: What size crate should I buy for my puppy?

Medium doodle (40 lbs): 36″ x 25″ x 27″ crate

Small/medium doodle (30 lbs): 32″ x 22.5″ x 24″ crate

We recommend wire crates with dividers so your puppy can grow into the space.

Question 5: What type of collar and leash do I need and what size is best for my puppy?

Adjustable collar (8–12") or XS for smaller pups

Nylon leash (avoid retractable)

To prevent leash chewing: attach a small chain section between collar and leash

Harnesses or slip leashes can also be used—sizes vary by weight, so wait to fit your puppy in person

Question 6: Where should my puppy sleep when I first bring him/her home?

Your puppy should sleep wherever you’d like them to sleep as an adult. Crates are great for structure, and if they’re in another room, playing soft music or a radio can provide extra comfort.

Question 7: How many times per night will my puppy need to go out to go potty?

Most 8-week-old puppies can sleep 4–6 hours at night without a potty break. To help them succeed, feed dinner by 6pm, limit water afterward, and take them out one last time right before bed (around 10pm). If they wake during the night, calmly take them outside to potty and return them straight to their crate—no play, just sleep.

Question 8: How many times per day should my puppy need to go potty?

- Right after waking

- Right after meals

- Every 2 hours on average

Watch for restlessness or “fussy” behavior—it usually means it’s time!

Question 9: Should my puppy have contact with other vaccinated dogs?

Yes, but only with fully vaccinated and parasite-free dogs. Avoid all feces (even dried) until your puppy has completed vaccinations at 16 weeks. Discuss flea/worm preventatives with your vet.

Question 10: How often should I give my puppy a bath and what should I use?

We do not bathe our puppies unless they are dirty and we use baby shampoo or something gentle. Make sure you put cotton balls in your puppy’s ears to prevent water getting into the ear canal. It’s a good idea to clean the ears after the bath with a good cleaning solution like MalAcetic Otic. Ask your veterinarian to show you how to clean your puppy’s ears. Nuvet as well as Pawtree offer wonderful shampoos & ear cleaning solutions!

Question 11: How often should I have my Labradoodle Puppy’s coat cut?

We usually suggest people decide what they like in the look of their Labradoodle. Do you like the longer, shaggy look, or do you like the shorter, more manicured coat? The shorter the coat, the easier the care will be, but it’s totally up to your personal preference. If you leave the coat longer, you will need to keep it combed out and mat free.

Question 12: Do you have recommendations for where to stay when we pick up our puppy?

We are 20 minutes from Lebanon, OR, and 30 minutes from Albany, Springfield, or Eugene. For the closest option, we recommend Best Western Boulder Falls Inn (Lebanon, OR). We’re happy to suggest more hotels, food, and activities if needed.
